    Self Driving Cars

In a world where all cars are self-driving the speed limit would likely be raised or even eliminated. Self-driving cars would be so much safer that you wouldn't have to worry about how fast they are going. Eta: I guess this would really only apply to freeways. You wouldn't want self-driving...

    Self Driving Cars

I am irrationally annoyed by this. When I am like 10 cars back and see the light turn green, I immediately think "why aren't we moving yet?" I know most of it just comes down to human reaction time, but if we could immediately start moving then I would be much happier.

Can we discuss laws and impact on states without getting “politically”? New FL law requiring age verification for adult sites.

This is not a bad idea. This is how biometrics verification works already. Your fingerprint/face id are stored in the phone itself and not passed to apps that use it. Apple/Google could easily extend that to include age verification. It would be way better than having to upload your ID to a...

Can we discuss laws and impact on states without getting “politically”? New FL law requiring age verification for adult sites.

The answer to this question is yes. People lie about their age to get on Facebook, though not as big of an issue now since Facebook isn't very popular among young people. But this also happens with dating apps, and I assume other social media.

Can we discuss laws and impact on states without getting “politically”? New FL law requiring age verification for adult sites.

My immediate reaction was a hard no on the government banning things, but after more reflection I think there is some sense in banning social media for children and teens. We already ban kids from partaking in a number of harmful things such as porn, booze, cigarettes and weed. Social media is...

Nothing seems to get done any more - Society is or isn’t crumbling- screen time and other lawn related gripes

I worked with a woman about 10 years ago that was an extreme example of this. I wasn't her manager but worked in a related role. She was always incredibly busy whenever you asked how she was doing. Other managers would question if we should add another person in that role since it seemed like...

    HR/Recruiter Guys - Salary Question

If you know of some companies that you might apply at, I've found levels.fyi to be fairly accurate based on my own position and knowledge of some other companies. Also 12 years in the same project seems crazy to me. I've been a developer for over 20 years and never spent more than probably...

Someone on another social media site said it was likely an automatic banning due to her account being reported by large number of Russian trolls. And that it was likely reinstated after it was reviewed by a human. Seems reasonable to me, rather than something nefarious by Twitter itself.

Who is the best Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle? The definitive poll!

Leonardo is clearly the best. On a side note, I had many hours of arguments with one of my friends because he tried to convince me that Raphael was the leader (in the original movies). He based it on the following lyrics in the song "Turtle Power". I don't think we ever settled that argument...

I believe the economy may be really bad right now.

It's not quite true that banks only lock in rates for 5 years. The rates for longer mortgages are just more expensive so nearly everyone gets 5 year mortgages. The posted rates on RBCs website right now are 6.99% for a 5 year, 7.55% for a 10 year and 12% for a 25 year. I imagine the banks are...

About a week ago, I turned off basically all notifications on my phone (except for a couple things like text messages). Just went into the settings and removed permissions for those apps to send notifications. No breaking news, no score updates. It's great. You don't realize how over-notified we...

    ChatGPT

As suspected, this is just a marketing video. They used still images and then narrated the prompts after. https://twitter.com/parmy/status/1732811357068615969?t=f8dfX4THfjkPhLINZC5GgQ How they actually did it: https://developers.googleblog.com/2023/12/how-its-made-gemini-multimodal-prompting.html

    ChatGPT

Most impressive. Assuming it actually works like that and that's not just a fake marketing video. It's insane how far this technology has come over the last 5 years. This is the type of demo that makes me think that AGI is possible in the next 5-10 years.

I don't think this actually matters. Perception is everything here. I don't think Disney is worried about losing the neo-nazi crowd (ie. The people that would normally see their ads beside nazi posts). They are worried about losing their current audience when they read these articles or see...

I actually thought the interviewer did a great job of trying to pull Musk back from the edge there. He failed, but he was actually trying to get Musk engage in a meaningful discussion that might make Musk look more reasonable and sympathetic.

This is how I viewed it as well. Musk doesn't have much of a filter at the best of times. Combine that with the fact that he is clearly angry and has the ultimate FU money, and this is what you get. It looks terrible in a public setting, but I'm sure a bunch a people wish they could do that to a...

    ChatGPT

Why do you think that? I was definitely in that camp not so long ago, but it is astonishing how far AI has come in the past 10 years. I would never have believed you if you told me 5 years ago that in 2023 we would have an AI that could pass the Turing test and pass the bar exam. But totally...

    ChatGPT

I think that question is impossible to answer. Nobody knows what AI is going to develop into in the future so opinions on safety are hard to judge. I think an easier question to answer is "Does Sam Altman put revenue ahead of safety?" I can't really answer that question either, but my guess is...

Coming out now that the firing might have been related to a big breakthrough in AGI: https://www.reuters.com/technology/sam-altmans-ouster-openai-was-precipitated-by-letter-board-about-ai-breakthrough-2023-11-22/.

I would argue that firing 3 quarters of the employees shows that he is definitely trying to make money. He has implemented many other cost cutting measures as well.
