***OFFICIAL WIZARDS THREAD - WIZARDS TO FACE "WIZARDS, BUT WITH A GOOD GM" IN FIRST ROUND *** (1 Viewer)

Bullets. Born and raised, and 49 years later, they're still, and always will be, the Bullets, to me. Or Lez Boulez, in Kornheiser-speak.

These days, I'm not a fan of what NBA-style basketball has morphed into. My interest started fading in the mid 90's and outside of the Bullets, I've only had a peripheral interest since about 5 years ago. Tried using fantasy NBA hoops to keep it alive, but that didn't do the trick. However, I'll never forget the 70's, the magic 1977 and 78 Seasons, and that completely unexpected run to a Title. After a long drought, it's nice that the Team isn't a laughingstock for a change. Hope they can sustain it for a while.

A blast from the past...a walk down memory lane:

Let's hope somebody shows up with Wall tonight unlike the last disaster they put forth. At least they were out of it from the opening tip so no real sweat was formed.

Yeah that was pathetic the other night. We need to bring our MMA game  :D

Hard to complain about 2-0 (or 0-0, depending on who you ask), but it would be nice to see Otto and Bojan get it going.  They are not needed as long as Wall and Beal are playing like they did last night, but I think Chicago will be a tougher matchup for them.
Good posting about needing more from others than Wall and Beal.

At least we're guaranteed another game before we have to say goodbye to the Buck and Phil combo.

Wouldn't be right if they went out without the angst and despair that has characterized their 3+ decades as Wiz broadcasters, anyway.

Good to see Otto and Bojan show up last night.  Hope they can keep it up.

A bit worried about Jason Smith's injury.  He hasn't been playing well, but without Mahinmi either, that would leave no big men on the bench who can match up with Howard or Millsap (unless you count Ochefu). That would be brutal if Morris gets in foul trouble again.

And after I post this, I see this update.

Ben Standig‏ @BenStandig  3 minutes ago
Wizards update: Jason Smith (calf) basically a game-time decision for Game 6, per Brooks. Huge if he cannot go.

:sadbanana:

...I know I've posted this before, but Standing's "Locked on Wizards" podcast is great.  He posts a new episode every night (after the game if there is one). It's my morning commute go-to.

Opening the 2017-18 season at home on ESPN as part of the national opening week slate, playing on Christmas Day at 5:30 on ABC.  Does not compute.

Of the guys Grunfeld brought in to help the bench it looks as though Meeks is the best of the bunch so far.Biggest question for him though is can he stay on the court? With his injury history I don't think you can count on him very much but if he can somehow stay healthy I like what he brings off the bench.Anybody else caught your eye so far TF(or anybody else for that matter)?

Sorry, missed this earlier.  You can tag me next time.

I haven't been watching any preseason, been wallowing in the misery of the Nats postseason. The bloggers and podcasters seem cautiously optimistic about Satoransky upping his game, also hearing good things about Smith continuing his mid-career renaissance as a stretch 4/5 and energy guy. Maybe they get a bounceback year from Mike Scot after a disastrous 16-17, although there's been very little buzz about him which is discouraging. But like you say Meeks seems to be the best of the bunch, a lot rides on whether he can stay healthy.

A couple things stood out last night.

Solid home win against a very talented, young Sixers team.By the end of the season if they stay healthy they will be a force.

Starters were outstanding for the most part.Did not like Wall taking as many shots as he did but he carried them for the most part  to seal the win.Thought Brooks would trust his bench a little more but with Smith going down he really had no choice but to throw Scott in and then go with Oubre and the starters late to secure the W.Saw very little of Frazier which I thought was supposed to be an upgrade for them, certainly didn't pan out in game 1 but I will wait and see how this plays out after 20 games or so.

Meeks is perfect for this team coming off the bench. Please stay healthy

Gortat was playing pissed off and Mahinmi was playing like he was getting pissed on.

Porter started hot and then it was almost like they forgot about him.He needs to be more involved.

Overall a good start even though the D still is a major problem area for this team. They have enough O to beat most teams.

Wall was awful last night (compared to his usual standards, of course). Bench was just as awful as it's been throughout the Grunfeld era. I'd say only Gortat and Oubre had good games- two very good signs, since Gortat looks 5 years younger than he actually is (will turn 34 this season) and Oubre is the most obvious path to improvement over last season.

The most amazing thing is that despite the sloppy play, and despite the Sixers having a lead at halftime and again as late as the 7 minute mark in the 4th, I never really thought they'd lose.  Such a foreign feeling; my entire life as a Wizards fan has been spent assuming they're gonna lose even when they have leads.

Wiz seem to be the only hope now of getting to the conference finals. The Caps are quickly turning into a dumpster fire and the Nats have no idea how to play post-season baseball(much like the Caps in the NHL).Wall even made mention of the streak and how he wants to be the one to break it.Go Zards!

Can't imagine anybody would argue Draymond Green is the biggest crybaby maybe the league has ever had.Watched that entire game and all he did while he was on the floor was #####,moan and complain about every single call or no call and then almost had to be escorted off the court while screaming obscenity after obscenity.Love the way he plays so don't get me wrong but damn his act would wear very thin for me if I had to be around him for long. Beal needs to keep his cool in that situation but I fully expected the Dubs to win that game even when they were down by almost 20 in the 3rd.

Let's not even mention that no show in the Lakers game late either.

Really wish Wall would keep his focus in games like last night. The refs clearly were in his head and he was just mailing it in on the defensive side of the ball for most of the night.I knew Warren was a nice player but damn he couldn't be stopped by anyone last night except his coach.

On the bright side it does look as though Scott will be a huge help off the bench if the last few are any indication.Beal was on fire,Porter not playing was huge and Satoransky got taken to school. His effort level was good but he got abused.

The quiet secret of the Wiz season that had been under wraps until the Phoenix loss is that Wall has been playing like hot garbage.  Even with his insane 5 of 6 from 3 night in Sacramento he's still got his lowest effective field goal percentage in five years.  Consider how bad the other 6 games have to be to make that true.  He's also go his highest turnover rate of his career and his lowest rebounding rate.  His assist rate is also the lowest in 4 years, but all four years are basically the same.  Free throw % down too. Basically he looks like a guy who started getting mentioned as a top tier talent and believed the hype a little too much.

The good news is that you'd assume he'll eventually calm down and go back to being our beloved pass-first PG who mostly makes good decisions, although I'm not sure it'll happen tonight on ESPN against the Cavs. If he does that and Porter and Oubre keep playing as well as they have the Wiz should be just fine, especially if Sato and Scott continue to be decent like you say.

And speaking of hot garbage @TobiasFunke that performance Friday night where Lebron did anything he wanted against anybody who dared guard him had me thinking WTF were Wall and Beal thinking doing that ESPN interview and proclaiming the Zards the best team in the East?I love that they are a confident group but why poke the sleeping giant when he is down?

Note to Wall and Beal:You are not the best team in the East until you prove it on the court when it counts and Lebron made it very clear as long as he's around and they continue to run their mouths that will be the result.Again,I love the confidence but it's almost as if they don't know the history of this city and the dumpster fires that are left behind with each sports franchise.

Now the win last night without Wall was outstanding even though they once again almost gave it away.Beal is really showing he can lead this team when he is asked to do so.Porter has also taken the steps needed to up his game and I really hope Wall gets away from shooting as much as he does and let others take open shots and not force things.Almost seems like he is pressing and thinks he's the only one who can get them out of a funk when the reality is he is the one who is playing bad and needs to defer.

I think the talking is done for a while.

And I'm hoping that Wall noticed that this team has some decent offensive talent while he was spectating in Toronto and will stop forcing the issue and taking inefficient shots.  If they had 2015-16 or 2016-17 John Wall on this team instead of this year's version they'd likely be 7-2 or better right now. IMO they've played about as well as you could hope top to bottom except for Wall (and Brooks' stubborn insistence on starting the 4th with an all-bench unit).

I have no idea what that was last night against the Mavs but it was very clearly a piss poor effort from almost the entire team.Gortat and Morris especially were really bad as was Wall's attempt to keep guards in front of him the entire night.People will point to his block from behind as to his defensive effort but it will never erase time and time again getting worked over by whomever he was assigned to.

Almost as if they just thought they could show up and the Mavs would just quit and we see how that worked out.The only real time the Mavs were in danger of giving it away was when the subs made a push for the Zards and then it quickly got squashed once the starters returned.

Total garbage effort. Next time some pundit craps on DC sports fans for not buying into the Wiz when they go on some modest win streak or get some national hype they should be forced to watch last night's game and the Suns game (both of them home games) on a loop. Our reluctance is always justified.

I also think Morris' return has actually hurt the Wiz, he looks like he's a long way from 100% but they've still forced him into the rotation and mostly shelved the deadly Wall-Beal-Porter-Oubre-Gortat lineup. They need to back to starting and maybe finishing games with that lineup and let Morris work his way back into shape slowly. And obviously the defensive effort was crap across the board except for the brief run by the bench you mentioned.

I'm sure they'll work it out and end up around where they should be eventually, but that 3-0 start had me dreaming of a 53 win season or something along those lines.  That's clearly not happening.  Looks like the 38 year streak without a 50 win season will continue.

Starters were complete garbage last night with the exception of Porter.I have seen enough of Frazier now to know he needs to stay on the bench when Wall returns.Let Satoranksy get the minutes since he seems like the more athletic guy and can actually provide a spark on both ends.He is nothing special but IMO Frazier is just another guy who doesn't really provide much value outside of just eating minutes.Really loving the way Oubre is playing now on both ends. His confidence level seems to keep growing as his role keeps expanding.

No idea what happened to Beal last night but thankfully he didn't pull a Wall and shoot over 20 times trying to get out of the funk he was in.Part of that was because Brooks sat him(and most of the other starters because the bench was so good)but he still looked really bad.

Beal goes off for 51 and the rest of the starters chip in with 21 :lmao:

Not even going to mention that CF they attempted in Utah. :X :X

Give me a positive spin @TobiasFunke,I'm just not seeing much I like this year from this squad.
Unfortunately I’m not either.

I guess maybe the upside is that Oubre and Porter both look great so if Wall and Morris get back to form they’ll be decent. Wall in particular has been surprisingly off this year. Also they play well against quality competition so it’s possible that they’re just on cruise control. And they’ve lost a lot of close games and have a decent point differential even with the Wall injury and the disaster in Utah, so they could be a little better than 16-14 would lead us to believe.

Thats the best I got

Not much has changed over the last month.John Wall can't play hero ball and expect to win every night and last night was a prime example of that.He has to get his bigs involved and also defer to Porter a bunch more. The ending of the game was perfect though with Beal not even getting the shot off with a chance to tie given how many bad turnovers they had against a depleted Jazz team.Rubio getting 21 is also embarrassing.

Best case they get a 4 seed and get to the 2nd round again but otherwise I see nothing to get me excited about advancing any farther than that.Brooks had to be livid after the way they gave that game away much like I was,it was almost to the point of me laughing at the execution late in the game at both ends.

It hasn't been fun watching this team this season, and last night was the worst of it. At home, against a team that embarrassed you a month ago and is missing two of their three best players AND their sixth man gets ejected AND you shoot 54% from the field, and you still can't win because you turn it over 22 times and show no interest in transition defense?  Gross.

I told my wife that any time I get excited about a stretch of play or want to spend money on tickets she should remind me of last night's game.

Well @TobiasFunke what in the hell do they do now?Coach was saying he wanted to make changes but realistically what can he really do given the lack of talent and depth he has to work with?

I would start with benching both Morris and Porter and rotate Gortat as much as possible to hopefully send the message to either produce or stay with your limited minutes.Oubre needs to start over Porter,he is just a better player.I also wouldn't mind sitting Beal(not as a starter but limit his first few minutes) while the 1st team is on the floor and let him and Porter get more minutes with the bench players.Jason Smith needs to get more run,he really can't be any worse than what Gortat is giving them and when you factor in Mahinmi is garbage is makes even more sense.

I'm also really tired of hearing this team say they need to do certain things and never end up doing them.I'm looking at you John Wall and you Brad Beal.Time to put up or shut up and lead by example.

I have also seen enough of Scott Brooks now to say bringing him in was a mistake. He is a players coach and they need someone who is a good X's and O's guy who also can crack the whip on the stars and starters while getting the message across. He has failed so far at both IMO.

And for the love of god please fire Ernie.

ETA:I'm not totally against trading Wall or Beal at this point either.

I have no idea. I'm as tired of this year's squad as you are. And I'm with you on Brooks- the collapse into hero ball in the 4th quarter is the primary culprit of the unending string of blown leads and the blame has to go to him and Wall.

There's no reason to trade Wall or Beal. In addition to them being foundational blocks, they don't really free up enough cap space to do something (Wiz are way over the cap) and I can't imagine a deal that would give them enough rebuild value to be worth it  Nobody who would want them for the near term enough to give value can package enough assets to warrant shipping them out.  Just gotta hold tight and hope they finally fire Ernie and replace him with someone who can build a team.

And maybe heed Steinberg's advice to enjoy the Caps and Nats regular seasons a little more now.  Wiz are showing us the fun of a successful regular season even if it is doomed to end in postseason misery.

Would have loved to be a fly on the wall to hear the players only meeting Wall was talking about a few days ago.J.J. Barea coming out and saying he isn't even liked by his own team right after that terrible loss to the Mavs(after being called a midget of course)leads me to believe they have a huge problem in that room.Fun times

Well that certainly changes things.Wall was pretty clearly not right so let's hope he can make a full recovery and get back to playing a lot better on both ends. This, however, should tell us quite a bit about his surrounding cast over this time. Can Porter step up and take charge when needed? Will Gortat and Morris remove their heads from their asses and contribute nightly? How does Sato handle these extra minutes?Does this finally get Ernie fired if they miss the playoffs?

I hate to even say it but I would rather see the last happen. He put this together and should be held responsible(very long overdue IMO).I would rather see them finish 9th or 10th and clean house from the front office to the coach right down to the bigs. They better hope Wall does recover because if this does slow him down it really does take away the one elite thing he does which spells major trouble IMO.

Satoransky a defensive stopper against Westbrook no less  .Link

Hard not to root for the guy given how much he hustles on both end of the floor.Wish he would shoot more and be more assertive on the offensive end but so far he should do fine given what Brooks has laid out for him.2 games without Wall and a dominant win over a terrible Hawks team and a gritty, hard fought win against OKC.Wall gives up 46 to Westbrook and Sato holds him under 20 on 5/18 shooting.

I have to admit @TobiasFunke that I did not see this stretch of great play coming with Wall out but I love it so far.The ball movement and defensive effort have been really good with different players stepping up each night. If this run does continue it does make me pause a second and wonder when Wall does return does all this just go away and they stand around and watch again or does he see the light?

With all that being said I fully expect the Sixers to give them the business next game.Eagles coming off a SB win will mean a huge buzz in the crowd and it will be a huge test for this bunch to keep pace.

I think (hope) Wall will find a way to fit in with all this ball movement. The Wiz were also very good early this season when he was healthy and motivated. They sucked when he was at half-speed and last time he was out (5-6). I also hope he sees that Beal should be the iso scorer closing out games and at the end of the shot clock. He's just better at it, and it's not close.  We'll see if Wall's ego can manage to hand off that responsibility.

And yeah, I agree they're gonna get waxed tonight at the back end of a back to back in front of that insane crowd.  Not a lot of soft spots in the schedule from here on out so this little win streak (and any wins they can pocket in the four games leading into the break) are huge for staying in the 4/5 matchup.

We'll see if Wall's ego can manage to hand off that responsibility.
I think this is the biggest issue.Just based on the whispers you can tell the room either just flat out doesn't like him or they don't like the way he tries to lead them. His interview certainly did seem to spell that out as well after the team meeting didn't go so well.

Totally agree on the Beal comment closing out games as well.He is prone to make a few bonehead plays but he is without question the best option as a shooter and also someone who can get his own shot late.

I think all this falls clearly on the head of Brooks though in he has to somehow make this work. The proof is in the last 5 games for me,this is how they have to play no matter who is on the court.Save the hero ball for desperate times.

He was good in Sacramento last year. I was surprised no one picked him up this season.

I can't believe Ernie is still under contract and that Ted signed him on in secret a few months ago.He must have some nudes of Ted,that is the only thing that makes any sense as to why he is still with the team.

I think it's time to move either Wall or Beal or at the very least entertain offers to see what kind of haul you could get but again I DO NOT want Ernie making this decision.Ernie and Brooks need to be shown the door, bottom line.
